How to Hire an Account Executive for Your Sales Motion
The best Account Executive is not the person with the most impressive logo on a résumé. It is the seller whose evidence matches your buyer, deal motion, level of support and expectations for pipeline ownership.
Define the sales environment before defining the candidate
Document who buys, why they buy, how long decisions take and what the Account Executive must do personally. A rep who succeeds with strong inbound demand, sales engineers and a known brand may not be prepared to create pipeline in an earlier-stage environment.
Clarify average deal complexity, territory, quota design, lead sources, implementation expectations and the support available from marketing, SDRs, solutions consulting and customer success.
Look for comparable evidence, not identical résumés
Industry experience can help, but the deeper question is whether the candidate has solved a similar selling problem. Evaluate the context around their results.
- Who was the buyer and how many stakeholders were involved?
- What portion of pipeline did the rep create personally?
- How complex was discovery, evaluation and procurement?
- What changed during the period, and how did the rep respond?
- What did the candidate learn from a deal that stalled or was lost?
Use a structured interview sequence
Begin with a career and performance interview to understand patterns across roles. Follow with focused interviews on discovery, pipeline creation, deal strategy and collaboration. A short work sample can ask the candidate to prepare for a first meeting or explain how they would prioritize a territory.
Keep the exercise close to the actual job and evaluate it with criteria shared in advance. The goal is to observe thinking and communication, not extract unpaid work.
Close the gap between offer and performance
A strong hiring process should lead directly into onboarding. Share the first 30-, 60- and 90-day expectations, the resources available and how performance will be reviewed. Candidates can then assess the role accurately, and the hiring team starts with aligned expectations.
If the team cannot explain how an Account Executive will become productive, that is an operating problem worth solving before the search accelerates.
Frequently asked questions
Should an Account Executive already know our industry?
Sometimes, but it should not be an automatic requirement. Comparable buyers, deal complexity and sales motion can be more predictive than an identical industry label.
What should an Account Executive work sample test?
Use a bounded scenario that reflects the real job, such as preparing discovery questions or prioritizing a territory. Evaluate the candidate's assumptions, judgment and communication.
How should references be used?
Use references to understand the context behind performance, management needs and working style. Ask focused questions tied to the scorecard rather than seeking a generic endorsement.
